A Community Forum on the Education Achievement Gap

On October 29 as part of our Life of Learning Initiative, 90.5 WESA will host a community forumfeaturing a panel of experts to address the problem of Pittsburgh’s educational achievement gap.

Kevin Gavin is the Executive Producer for Special News Projects and says much of the forum will be devoted to exploring contributing factors to the gap.

Gavin says often this gap is expressed in terms of “white student versus minority student,” but the panel will look at the more pressing issue of low-income students against not-low-income students. The panelists, which include career-long educators, principals and faith leaders, are all community innovators.

“This is a community approach to this issue,” says Gavin, “what community resources can we target toward the educationally vulnerable students?”
