The Pittsburgh Penguins begin their quest Wednesday for a third straight Stanley Cup when they host the Philadelphia Flyers in game one of a seven-game first-round playoff series.
The last team to win three straight NHL titles was the New York Islanders, which captured four straight championships from 1980-83.
In another of their conversations about Pittsburgh sports teams, NPR’s biggest Pittsburgh sports fan, David Greene and 90.5 WESA’s Kevin Gavin talk about their hopes for the Penguins.
Greene on the chances for a "threepeat":
"A threepeat is really tough. I want nothing more than for the Pens to win a third [straight] cup. But I'm sort of like bracing myself , thinking like it can't possibly be this good."
Greene says if the Penguins don't win the Cup he wants them to at least beat the Washington Capitols somewhere during the playoffs:
"Maybe in some real painful way, like a game seven where the Caps have a two goal lead and the Pens score three in the third period. I'm terrible (chuckling)."
Greene says if the Penguins don't win the Cup, he's rooting for the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights, led by former Pens' goalie Marc-Andre Fleury:
"I might have rooted for them (the Golden Knights) for what happened in Vegas and how the team helped the city through that massacre (the mass shooting Oct. 1), and to have Fleury playing a role in helping that city, inspiring that city, it's a no-brainer."
