“Stan the Man”…”A True Sports Hero”

The Pennsylvania State Senate today passed a resolution honoring Baseball Hall of Famer Stanley Musial.

“Stan the Man," as he was known, was a Donora, Pennsylvania native, and died January 22nd at the age of 92.

Senator Tim Solobay (D-Washington County), who introduced the measure, said Musial leaves behind a great legacy.

“ 'Stan the Man' Musial was an athlete from the greatest generation. He was a true sports hero in every sense of the word.”

Born Stanislaw Franciszek Musial in November 1920, Musial played 22 seasons in the major leagues with the Saint Louis Cardinals from 1941 to 1963. In that time Musial accumulated 3,630 hits (ranking 4th all-time) and 475 home runs.

Musial was also named the National League’s Most Valuable Player three times and played on three World Series Championship teams.

He said Musial wasn’t only a baseball hero.

“After winning his second World Series in 1944, he missed an entire year of baseball while he served in the United States Navy,” said Solobay. “He served as chairman of the President’s Council of Physical Fitness and Sports between 1964 and 1967. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

Musial was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969, in his first year of eligibility.

Recently Donora-Monessen Bridge was renamed The Stan Musial Bridge in his honor.
