Station Square Light Rail To Re-Open (Partly) Thursday

Aug 22, 2018

Partial light rail service will resume Thursday at Station Square, Port Authority officials said.

Passengers will be able to board outbound trains for the first time there since a Norfolk Southern train derailed and collapsed onto the station and tracks Aug. 5. However, inbound travelers will continue to be detoured along the Allentown line as crews finish safety tests. Officials say they hope to restore full service this weekend.

According to the Port Authority more than 2,400 passengers use the Station Square stop each day. The agency’s CEO Katharine Kelleman said in a release Wednesday that the freight train derailment had disrupted many residents’ lives.

“I’d like to thank riders for being so patient while we repaired the damage,” she said.

In the last two weeks, Port Authority crews and contractors replaced more than 1,600 feet of light rail track and 4,000 feet of power lines. Officials say they’re working to make sure Port Authority doesn’t ultimately foot the bill for that work.
