Veterans' Stories: Project 412 Debuts Tuesday, October 7

Created, Produced by Area Veterans, Series Spotlights Military Experience

A unique series of broadcast interviews created and produced by a group of Pittsburgh-area active-duty military personnel and veterans will air on 90.5 WESA every Tuesday starting October 7 through Veterans Day (November 11). Segments will air during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Veterans' Stories: Project 412 shines a spotlight on area veterans from all branches of the military, who share personal memories and stories about their service in conflicts from the second World War to Iraq and Afghanistan. Area veterans interviewed include Ben Keen, Amy Mattila, Shawn Jones, Amanda Haines, Tom Jones and Tom Worstell. In addition to the on-air features, there will be additional online features on wesa.fm beginning October 7.

The production team met and conceived the project through Leadership Pittsburgh's 2014 Community Leadership Course for Veterans. The production team includes two active-duty personnel, Lt. Ariana Pourmonir Mohnke (U.S. Coast Guard) and Sgt. Rachel Kovach (PA Army National Guard), veterans James Yauger (U.S. Army), Joseph Cooper (U.S. Marine Corps), and Benjamin Stahl (United States Navy). Although none of the team members is a professional journalist, the project required all of them to learn basic principles of journalism, interviewing, editing, and audio production skills.Their project was guided by Kevin Gavin, 90.5 WESA’s Executive Producer for Special News Projects.

Ariana Pourmonir Mohnke and Benjamin Stahl will be guests on 90.5 WESA’s Essential Pittsburgh on Monday, October 6, discussing the series and the project with host Paul Guggenheimer.
