A boatload of excitement surrounded Orgone's live performance at KEXP: The band's debut album, The Killion Floor, had already made the "Best of 2007" lists for many of our DJs. When we heard that the San Francisco-based group was making a visit to Seattle, we knew we had to get Orgone into our studio to experience its funky, soulful sound in a live setting.
Orgone did not disappoint. I imagined listeners in cubicles all over the world dancing in their seats. I certainly was, and from where I sat, I had the perfect vantage point to watch guitarist Sergio Rios churn out funky riffs and blistering solos.
Rios and his band poured their hearts into both their originals and the covers they played, including the funky stomp of "Do Your Thing" — by the great Isaac Hayes — and "I Get Lifted," an obscure groover written by Harry Wayne Casey of none other than K.C. and the Sunshine Band. An appropriate selection, given how many spirits got lifted by this session.
