Sera Cahoone: Tiny Desk Concert

Sera Cahoone got her start playing drums for a few widely adored bands in the Pacific Northwest, most notably Band of Horses and the spell-checker-defying Carissa's Wierd. But her self-titled, self-released 2006 album marked her as a fully formed talent — a warm and inviting singer whose songs convey world-weariness and homespun grace.

At its best — hear "Couch Song" for an example — Cahoone's music perfectly simulates the sensation of lying in a hammock and sipping an iced tea, possibly while being fanned. Her songs may convey conflict or complication, but they're shot through with rare empathy; heard at the right time, they're like sonic foot-rubs at the end of a rough day.

Earlier this year, Cahoone made her national debut with another gentle marvel, Only as the Day Is Long; as with its predecessor, its songs are perfectly suited for the humble intimacy of a Tiny Desk Concert.

Stephen Thompson is a writer, editor and reviewer for NPR Music, where he speaks into any microphone that will have him and appears as a frequent panelist on All Songs Considered. Since 2010, Thompson has been a fixture on the NPR roundtable podcast Pop Culture Happy Hour, which he created and developed with NPR correspondent Linda Holmes. In 2008, he and Bob Boilen created the NPR Music video series Tiny Desk Concerts, in which musicians perform at Boilen's desk. (To be more specific, Thompson had the idea, which took seconds, while Boilen created the series, which took years. Thompson will insist upon equal billing until the day he dies.)
