With its slow, rhythmic beat, eerie vocals, and minimalist instrumentation, "Wtt," may not have the characteristics of the typical hit single, but this opening track confidently and effectively builds tension and exhibits the strange, magnetic allure of The Diamond Center. My Only Companion is just the group's second official LP, but both their sound and the band itself are growing. The Diamond Center began as a project between Brandi Price and Kyle Harris in Athens, GA, but with the addition of Price's sister, Jana, and most recently Alan Brown, it has since evolved into a four-piece that calls Lubbock, TX home.
From the exotic places they encountered on a road trip, like Joshua Tree National Park and the Salton Sea, to the familiar sight of the huge black grackles living in the tree of their front yard, Harris and Price looked to their surroundings for inspiration for My Only Companion. They recorded the album during the span of a few months in Harris' home. According to Brandi Price, the "warmness and rawness" inherent in the album's sound and the unplanned "cameos" made by Harris' cat and dog capture what she terms "the little idiosyncrasies" of recording in such an intimate environment. The group even recruited some friends to "stomp and clap and holler" on the more raucous and upbeat track "The Deer Pistol." Combined with Price's alluring, ethereal vocals, the quirks of My Only Companion are what make this dreamy, slightly off-kilter music shine.
