Matt Costa On World Cafe

The California folk charmer Matt Costa wasn't originally drawn to the guitar. As a teenager, Costa dreamed of becoming a professional skateboarder, but an injury derailed him for more than a year. That's when he realized that music was his true calling.

Costa's easy-going guitar style has won over crowds during opening gigs for Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse and Oasis.  His new album, Mobile Chateau, marks a shift in style, though. Costa, who has long admired 1960s psychedelia artists like Donovan and the Electric Prunes, decided to go in that direction on his fourth record. "I've always been drawn to that sound," he said. "I've been hearing songs like these in my head for my whole life and Mobile Chateau is the closest I've gotten to getting those songs out of my head and onto a record."
