County Courthouse Fountain Gushes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato wants everyone to know it. He and County Treasurer John Weinstein took a step toward that goal Friday by turning the water of the Allegheny County Courthouse fountain bright pink, the signature color of breast cancer awareness and research.

"Nothing beats early detection," said Onorato. "It's the only sure way to have a 100% curable rate, by detecting it as early as possible. That's why it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's the 'awareness' part that we're celebrating."

To that end, Onorato asked other government bodies and private companies to dye the waters of their fountains pink as well.

Onorato said women should get tested for breast cancer once or twice each year. According to the American Cancer Society, about one of every eight women in the country will eventually develop breast cancer.
