The Community College of Allegheny County is moving forward with a feasibility study on expanding its campus in the North Hills. Currently there are about 6,000 credit-seeking students taking classes at the McCandless campus.
"That facility is one of our campuses that has seen significant growth over the past several years, we're projecting having capacity concerns there over the coming years, we're already having some difficulty with parking," said David Hoovler, spokesman for CCAC.
The board of trustees approved the $65,000 study at a meeting this week. Hoovler said the likely scenario will be relocation because of current parking limitations and classrom and office space constraints.
"Right up there along 19 there isn't really any open land around the campus to expand," he said.
While enrollment this semester has been flat throughout the system, Hoovler said student numbers remain at or above record levels, and are not expected to taper off much. He added that enrollment at the north campus is continuing to increase.
The feasibility study will be done by Oxford Development Corp. and will cost about $30,000. The remaining funds will be used for subcontractors. The Regional Industrial Development Corp.'s technology park in Marshall has been mentioned as a possible site, however, Hoovler said they are still looking at several parcels.
