McQueary Testifies He Told Curley and Schultz about Abuse

A much-awaited witness took the stand in the preliminary hearing of Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, the top administrators at Penn State charged with covering up alleged child sexual abuse.

After weeks of speculation about exactly what Mike McQueary saw and exactly how he described it, the assistant football coach says that there's no doubt in his mind that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky "crossed the line" in a Penn State locker room in 2002, and that he relayed that to Curley and Schultz.

What McQueary told the administrators is key in determining whether or not they lied to a grand jury.

McQueary said that he saw Sandusky in a locker room shower, with his body up against a young, pre-pubescent boy.

The witness said he heard rhythmic slapping sounds and that both Sandusky and the boy looked him in the eye. The next day, McQueary said that he discussed the incident with ousted Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. He recalled meeting with Curley and Schultz nine or ten days later.

McQueary said that he's sure they finished that meeting knowing that what he saw was of a "sexual nature" and was "wrong." Defense attorneys for Curley and Schultz asked repeatedly if McQueary reported what he saw to the police. McQueary said that he thought he had — by reporting to Schultz, who oversees the campus police.

Top Penn State officials Tim Curley and Gary Schultz still await a Dauphin County district judge's ruling on whether or not they'll go to trial for charges that they failed to report a suspicion of child abuse by Jerry Sandusky and then lied about it to a grand jury.
