SUV Crashes Into PNC Office Building

An unidentified driver crashed a stolen sport utility vehicle into PNC's Firstside Center on Tuesday afternoon.

The blue SUV "came flying down Ross Street" and into the First Avenue building's revolving doors about 2:30 PM, according to Bob Molyneaux of the Bureau of Building Inspection.

"From what they are saying, [the driver] jumped out on foot and ran down Ross Street, and into 200 Ross Street, and that's about all we know," said Molyneaux. The suspect hadn't been apprehended as of Wednesday morning.

Police cordoned off a three-block radius surrounding the intersection of First Avenue and Ross Street. The bomb squad was called to the scene, but police said they don't expect to find any bombs. It was unclear whether the crash was accidental or purposeful.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald was among the many drivers who were detoured by traffic officers following the incident. He said his car was stopped on his way back from the governor's budget address.

"We literally got — boom — stopped like everybody else down on Second Avenue," said Fitzgerald.

He joked about how difficult it was to get through downtown. "We kind of came up the train line, climbed over some fences, and worked our way through."
