The Lawrenceville Corporation and Collier Development have agreed to engage in a master planning process to redevelop the 10-acre Iron City Brewery location on Liberty Avenue. The site, owned by Collier Development, has been unoccupied since production was moved to Latrobe, PA in 2009.
Executive Director of the Lawrenceville Corporation Matthew Galluzzo said the historic preservation and reuse of the property depends largely on community suggestions. Those suggestions come through a series of at least three open community meetings over the next several months.
"At present we're looking to create a mixed-use project and whether or not that includes condominiums, or market-rate residential, or commercial users, or industrial users, remains to be seen," said Galluzzo.
Galluzzo added the area could also be used for commuter rail or biking and walking trails because a rail line extends around the site and into Oakland and Hazelwood.
"The site itself, I think, is important because of its proximity to downtown and the East End neighborhoods as a gateway, but it also has interesting transportation connections," Galluzzo said.
Galluzzo said the plan will cost $25,000. Half of that is coming from Collier Development, and the other half is coming from city funds. The Lawrenceville Corporation will manage the money. He said the funds were earmarked by the property's prior owners and the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority.
