The career of the experimental rock trio Liars has been defined by nomadic wanderings, both geographically and sonically. Formed in L.A., the trio relocated to Brooklyn, then to rural New Jersey, and eventually to Berlin, before returning to L.A.
During that time, the group has careened from the caustic post-punk of 2001's They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top to the stark, queasy noise-rock of follow-ups They Were Wrong, So We Drowned and Drum's Not Dead and beyond. Liars' self-titled fourth album and 2010's Sisterworld found the band settling on a more grounded, cohesive sound and winning accolades from the press along the way.
With WIXIW (prounced "wish you"), released last month, the group builds on its earlier albums' wide-ranging musical foundation. Produced by Mute Records founder and early post-punk/synth-pop innovator Daniel Miller, WIXIW finds the trio folding in electronic influences for a sound that's cold and clinical, yet deeply emotional.
Currently on a summer tour across North America, Liars recently stopped by The Current's Twin Cities studios to perform its new single, "No. 1 Against the Rush."
