Land and water activities will highlight the 14th Annual Regatta at Lake Arthur this Saturday and Sunday, August 4-5 at Moraine State Park.
Park Manager Dan Bickel said this will not be a typical boater-oriented event. "A lot of times people think of a regatta as a power event with a lot of speed boats. This event is a little different, and from the start it's been an outdoor recreation festival, so we highlight a lot of the people power, the outdoor recreation events that are available and like to showcase what's happening at Moraine State Park," Bickel said.
The regatta kicks off at 9:00 AM Saturday with a canoe/kayak race with two and four mile courses. Other activities will include sailing races, a wooden toy-building workshop, and a Ford V-8 car display.
Bickel said the event will be more family-oriented and no prior boating or kayaking experience, in this case, is necessary.
"Basically, if you've never kayaked before, you get the chance to try out a variety of different kayaks, and there are a number of skilled instructors there that can get you started, so they provide the life jackets and all the equipment. You just need to show up and they'll give some pretty good instruction for you as long as you want to give it a try," Bickel said.
Bickel added the evening performances will make the park "the place to be" on Saturday night.
"We have music both days, all day long — some great music — and the Allegheny Brass Band is on Saturday evening from 8:00-9:30, which they're going to lead right into a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Arthur," Bickel said.
