The Bottle Rockets have appeared on Mountain Stage seven times over the years, but this was the first time they've ever performed what might be their most-requested tune on the show — the satirical rocker "Radar Gun." Frontman and primary songwriter Brian Henneman has been visiting Mountain Stage even longer than his band; his first trip to the stage was with seminal alt-country band Uncle Tupelo.
Now in their 20th year, the Bottle Rockets were almost instantly recognized as one of the most clever and poignant participants in the early '90s roots rock revival. The band's first albums, Bottle Rocketsand The Brooklyn Side, will be rereleased as a 2-CD set Nov. 19. The package includes demos, some of which feature Uncle Tupelo's Jay Farrar (now in Son Volt) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) singing backup.
The Bottle Rockets' Mountain Stage set also includes their song "Thousand Dollar Car," which Henneman describes as the band's "Born to Run" on the "Springsteen Conversion Scale." John Horton plays lead guitar, with Keith Voegele on bass and Mark Ortmann on drums.
