Read and listen to a story about Mike Williams as part of a series honoring the individuals who make a difference in people’s lives: 90.5 WESA Celebrates People Making a Difference.

Thirty-year old landscaper Mike Williams had been helping Sally, an elderly woman, with the landscaping of her house and noticed the inside was in shambles.

She wanted to move into a senior living facility but couldn’t afford to fix her house up for sale. He began collecting materials and money, some donated, some out of his own pocket, and organized 30 of his friends to repair Sally’s house. That was on Labor Day three years ago.

That gave Mike the impetus to want to help others who are struggling financially and in desperate need of help with their homes. He started what his godmother called the “Labor Day of Love.”  Mike finds a home, organizes the labor, gets donations for materials, and every Labor Day he and his volunteers spend the day fixing up someone’s house.
