90.5 WESA Weekend Watch 8/17 & 8/18

Fancy yourself to be a wizard with words? The Pittsburgh Crossword Puzzle Tournament this Saturday might be the place to prove yourself. Competitors will be provided three puzzles of increasing difficulty to be solved in a timed fashion, and points will be awarded for accuracy and speed of solving. If you feel like you might need a hand, you can sign up for the Pairs Tournament with a friend or loved one. All proceeds will benefit the Western PA Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphona Society. Registration will open at 12:30 p.m., and the tournament will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Oakland.

Join your local Nerdfighters for a film screening of A Film to Decrease Worldsuck: The Nerdfighters Documentary. Whether you are a longtime John Green enthusiast or you have never heard the term “Nerdfighter” before, this movie strives to be all-inclusive with its exploration of who or what a Nerdfighter is and how the concept began. Lauren Fairweather, Matt Maggiacomo, and Tonks and the Aurors will provide musical performances. Nerdfighters at the event will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The event starts at 5 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. this Sunday at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland.

More than 30 teams throw down and bowl this Saturday at the 4th Annual Bocce Tournament and Festival. Bocce courts will be set up across the street from the Heinz History Center, setting the stage for a day of fun. Live entertainment will be provided by Pure Gold, Vito DiSalvo & Daniela Pasquini, and Jimmy Sapienza, with free guided tours through the History Center’s Italian American Collection running throughout the day. Enjoy Italian food from Common Plea, including sandwiches, eggplant timbale, gelato, and a selection of Italian beer and wine. The Bocce Tournament & Festival is this Saturday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District.

The Eclectic Laboratory Chamber Orchestra takes up the call to arms of offbeat singer-songwriter Beck this Sunday with their interpretation of Song Reader. Featuring 20 songs originally published only as individual pieces of sheet music, E.L.C.O. offers their interpretation of Beck’s inventive work. The songbook covers a range of styles--from polka and dirge to indie rock--and promises to be a truly unique, eclectic experience. Catch the Eclectic Laboratory Chamber Orchestra this Sunday at 8 p.m. performing at the Grey Box Theatre in Lawrenceville.

The people at MAKE magazine and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh present the Pittsburgh Mini Maker Faire this Sunday. A showcase of invention and creativity, this family friendly event is meant as an exploration and celebration of technology do-it-yourself-ers. Learn what people are making and how they are making it, and learn about how this resourceful community undertakes incredible projects. The Pittsburgh Mini Maker Faire runs this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Buhl Community Park in Allegheny Square and at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side.
