Pittsburgh Gets RADical with Free Cultural Events

Want to get cultured and take in some of Pittsburgh’s finest attractions, for free?

This Saturday marks the beginning of RADical Days. Cultural venues across the county will be opening their doors for special, free admission events into November. This annual program is meant as a way for organizations that receive tax revenues to thank the public for their support.

The Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) program began 20 years ago to help sponsor regional assets using revenue gathered by a 1 percent sales tax. To date the program has invested 2.8 billion dollars in Allegheny County.

RADical days kicks off Saturday with free family art activities and tours as well as free access to the Carriage and Art Museum at The Frick Art & Historical Center. According to RAD Executive Director David Donahoe, RADical Days 12th year will bring unique offerings at new venues.

“There are some outdoor events in one of our newer regional parks which is called Boyce-Mayview Park which is out in Upper St. Clair, there’s even some lawn bowling at the Frick Park this year which is a new thing so there’s really something for everyone we hope people will get out and participate,” he said.

The cultural celebrations continue on a regular basis until Oct. 19, then return on Nov. 10 with free admission to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium which will feature performances from local musical groups throughout the day. According to Donahoe, the delay is due to road construction near the zoo that may complicate guests’ arrival.

“It’s a very well attended event and therefore they wanted to make sure they could manage it so we did allow them to extend RADical days into November.”
