The "Keys to the City" in Alexandria, Virginia

Visitors to vibrant Alexandria, Virginia will find a city painted with history and proud to show it off.

Travel contributor Elaine Labalme finds the waterfront town both scenic and accessible, especially to visitors with dogs.

She suggests a historic walk of the city, beginning at the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market in front of City Hall.

Pick up the “Keys to the City” and head to the older sites of the region, says Labalme. She recommends seeing the Carlisle House, Christ Church on Washington Street and the Torpedo Factory Arts Center.

For dinner later, check out Red Rocks Pizzeria on King Street and the Majestic Café.
