Pittsburgh's brand new pop-up food flea market kicks off this Saturday. Dubbed Smorgasburgh, the open-air market features delicacies from 30 of the region’s finest chefs, farmers, and related purveyors. Food vendors will come from a variety of cuisines, featuring appearances by Fukuda, The Crested Duck, Franktuary, and Bluebird Kitchen. Live music will be performed by singer/songwriter Madeline Rae. Smorgasburgh opens for business this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lot at 23rd and Smallman in the Strip District.
Pittsburgh zine culture is having a renaissance this Sunday with the 3rd Annual Pittsburgh ZineFair. Popularized in the '90s before the advent of the Internet, zines are self-published magazines distributed on a small scale that are a perfect form of self-expression for their creators. The tabling expo will feature the works of more than 50 artists and writers showcasing their works. General admission for the event is completely free, and the fair features a zine-reading nook and a drop-in zine-making workshop to let you get involved in the experience. The 3rd Annual Pittsburgh ZineFair comes to the Union Project this Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
If you are feeling the urge to fight the power, come out to celebrate freedom from censorship with FREADom: A Celebration of the Right to Read this Sunday. Join Chrystal Bates of the Pittsburgh Playwrights, Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, soloists from the Renaissance City Choir, and more as they read selections from their favorite banned or challenged books. As a bonus, the video compilation Banned TV is set to be showcased, featuring clips from TV shows and episodes banned from the airwaves. FREADom: A Celebration of the Right to Read begins this Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Frick Fine Arts Building at the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland.
This Saturday, the East End Book Exchange hosts VERSIFY, a reading series featuring the works from four incredibly talented local poets. Poets David Adès, Laurie Arnold-McMillan, Angele Ellis, and Sheila Kelly lend their voices to the stellar reading. The author’s books will be available for purchase, and light refreshments will be provided for the audience members as they enjoy the vibrant works of literary art. The poetry reading VERSIFY begins this Saturday at 7:30 pm at the East End Book Exchange.
