90.5 WESA Weekend Watch 10/5 & 10/6

The onset of October means it is time for Halloween preparations to begin. This month, the Manor Theater helps movie-lovers gear up for the season with the film series Manor at Midnight. Come out every Saturday in October to view classic ghoulish cinema on the big screen. The series begins with Steven Spielberg’s classic ocean thriller Jaws. Look for the series to continue throughout the month of October, as the Manor answers the important questions: Where is Johnny? Can anyone hear you scream in space? And most importantly, does the power of Christ compel you? The M@M horror movie series starts this Saturday at midnight at the Manor Theater in Squirrel Hill, and will continue every Saturday until Nov. 9.

The first week of October sees the return of the annual Young Playwrights Festival. Each year the City Theatre stages six winning plays selected from over 200 submissions. This year features plays written by Mayah El-Dehaibi, Shea Minter, and Tyler Hudson in the high school division, and Hope and Honesty LeGrande, Lily Buchanan, and Alayna Perrine and Ariana Distler in the middle school division. Weekend performances of the young artists’ works are open to the public. The Young Playwrights Festival runs this weekend, with performances on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the City Theatre in South Side.

Pittsburgh’s only contemporary dance festival returns for its fifth year this weekend. The newMoves Dance Festival began Thursday, but you can catch the festival’s final day on Saturday. Featuring choreography from both emerging and established choreographers, the festival stands to highlight works from both visiting and local artists. Events run throughout the day, with the schedule including a site visit at the PearlArts Studio, the Treading art Roaming Dance Party, and the interactive performance group, all leading up to the final featured performance of the festival. The final day of the newMoves Dance Festival runs this Saturday, with the featured performance playing from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre in East Liberty. You can find a full schedule of events at the festival’s website.

Featuring 35 artists from 19 countries, the Carnegie Museum of Art’s signature survey series returns for the 2013 Carnegie International. The exhibition opens this weekend and is billed as being “guided by a shared passion for the individual and the exceptional.” The series’ opening brings with it two days of community events. Events on Saturday include musical performances, readings, a puppet performance, and the interactive experience, “Soccer Ball and Figure.” Sunday’s activities will move to Braddock for fun activities and food. The 2013 Carnegie International opens this weekend at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland, with opening events occurring throughout the weekend at various venues.
