90.5 WESA Weekend Watch 10/26 & 10/27

This weekend, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre takes on the works of Tony and Emmy award-winning choreography powerhouse Twyla Tharp with a pairing of two of her creations. “An Evening with TwylaTharp” features “Nine Sinatra Songs” and “In the Upper Room.” With “Nine Sinatra Songs,” Tharp blends ballet and ballroom movement, all set to songs by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. “In the Upper Room” features a powerful tour de force driven by a score written by Philip Glass. Featuring costumes designed by Oscar de la Renta and Norma Kamali, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre blends dance, music, and fashion for a breathtaking season opener. Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s “An Evening with Twyla Tharp” runs this weekend with performances on Saturday at 8:00 pm and on Sunday at 2:00 pm at the Benedum Center in downtown’s Cultural District.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra takes a spooky turn with this weekend’s family-friendly “Halloween Spooktacular.” Kicking off this season’s Fiddlesticks Family Series, resident conductor Lawrence Loh and vocalist Katy Williams help “scared-y cat” Fiddlesticks decide what costume to wear for Halloween. Featuring performances of kid-friendly music from “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” Heinz Hall is the place to be this Halloween. “Fiddlesticks: Halloween Spooktacular” plays this Saturday morning at 11:15 am at Heinz Hall in the Cultural District downtown.

Showcasing the odd and the thought-forgotten, the nationally touring Found Footage Festival makes its first ever Pittsburgh appearance this Saturday. Hosts Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett—alumni of such comedy staples as The Onion and the Late Show with David  Letterman—show off their 2013 lineup of found video clips and live comedy while offering their own insights and commentaries. Presented by the Brooklyn Brewery, a portion of the show’s proceeds will go to benefit Slow Food Pittsburgh. The strange and hilarious Found Footage Festival plays this Saturday for one night only at 9:00 pm at the Regent Square Theater on Regent Square.

It’s peace, love, and pierogies this weekend as the city experiences the first Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival. This all ages event is free and open to the public. Enjoy live music, shop the pop-up pierogi marketplace, paint your own pierogies and much more while you enjoy your hot pierogi. Special live performances include the Olga Watkins Band, Jimbo and the Soupbones, Good Brother Earl, the Johnny Miller Band, and Pandemic. Come out and join your favorite Pittsburgh restaurants and purveyors as they dish out some hot meals.
