The Fort Pitt Regiment: An Attractive Brand of Soccer

Fort Pitt Regiment

The World Cup soccer tournament taking place in Brazil is really calling attention to the sport of soccer in the United States. Here in western Pennsylvania a new soccer team has just formed in the last year.

The Fort Pitt Regiment soccer team is the newest member of the Nation Premier Soccer League. But not many Pittsburgh residents know anything about the league. Tim McCoy, Director of Business Operations and board member of the Regiment said this new team is not trying to compete with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

“What we offer is an affordable evening out and in some ways I would equate it to the difference between the Washington Wild Things and the Pittsburgh Pirates.”

With the current popularity of World Cup Soccer, the Regiment’s inaugural season was well timed.

“The number of phone calls that we’ve gotten both in general terms at PA West Soccer and calls and inquiries about the Regiment is good because it does lay that groundwork. It makes talking to people about it a little easier. Everybody’s talking about soccer so it’s easy to slide it into that conversation,” said McCoy.

He explained how the Regiment try to play “an attractive brand of soccer" which includes more passing and creativity. The product of which is entertaining, exciting soccer that is enjoyable to watch.

The team is currently in first place and two points ahead of Cleveland, and McCoy noted, “Anytime you can say that you’re ahead of Cleveland, it’s a good day and we’ve got a game with them left to try and solidify that position.” Along with Cleveland, the Regiment have already developed rivalries with Erie and Buffalo.

With the season winding down, the team looks to be in prime position for a playoff run. The games are played at Montour High School and for more information on tickets you can visit the team website.
