Savannah: A Belle of Southern Charm

It’s the oldest city in Georgia and was once the state capital: Savannah. The city draws a number of tourists who come to look at its architecture and historic sites. One recent visitor to the city was travel contributor Elaine Labalme.

The charms and southern comfort found in Savannah make it a great place to visit for a summer trip. Labalme gives us her fabulous five lists of things to see, do and most importantly, where to eat in the city of Savannah.

1. Historic Squares
- Elaine says to NOT take a trolley tour to explore Savannah’s many squares, be sure to walk to fully enjoy them.
- Make sure to visit Bull Street, the main square of the city. Honorable mentions from Elaine include Johnson Square, Orleans Square's German-American fountain, and Chippewa square, which just so happens to be where Forrest sits to wait for the bus in film ‘Forrest Gump.’
- On Elaine’s foodie list, enjoy Vinny Van Go Go’s Pizza in the City Market as you’re exploring the various squares.

2. Telfair Museum
- The museum contains three separate facilities, but Elaine’s favorite is the Jepson Center.
- Exhibits rotate throughout the year in the museum, but right now a Marilyn Monroe exhibit is featured.
- The Telfair Museum is located in the birthplace of Juliet Gordon-Lowe, founder of the Girl Scouts of America, so you may see quite a few girl scouts in the area.

3. Wiley’s Championship BBQ
- Wiley’s is described as “World Class BBQ In Your Own Backyard!”
- Elaine’s favorite on the menu? The Redneck Nachos with homemade chips and pulled pork, she recommends a large order over the smaller portion.

4. Alligator Soul
- This restaurant is for the most adventurous because yes, they DO serve alligator!
- From here, Elaine recommends wrapping up your dinner at Leopold’s Ice Cream for caramel swirl ice cream.

5.Westin Savannah Harbor
- The Westin in the harbor is where Elaine recommends staying, as it keeps you a bit removed from the full action of Savannah.
-You aren’t too far out of the city by staying here, however, with a ferry available to take you into downtown Savannah every 20 minutes.
