A Pittsburgh organization is asking you to put on your robe and head to the roof.
The Coen brothers’ cult hit “The Big Lebowski” will be shown Sept. 10 on the rooftop of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Theater Square Garage.
The second Rooftop Shindig, courtesy of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP), will feature live music, food, cocktails and games, all leading up to the feature presentation at 8:30 p.m. of the classic crime comedy flick.
“You don’t always think of the rooftop of a parking garage as a place where you would want to go and hang out and spend a night,” PDP vice president of marketing and communications Leigh White said. “But to be able to do something really fun and creative -- which we think Downtown is becoming increasingly known for, these really fantastic, unique events -- that really appeals to us.”
Admission to the event is free. Food and drink isn’t, but attendees who wear a bathrobe will get a discount on the main character’s favorite cocktail, the White Russian.
Approximately 500 people attended the first Rooftop Shindig in August, when “Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure” was presented.
“It was a beautiful night. Just an incredible location to be on top of this parking garage and look around at the city lit up beautifully around you while you’re watching a fun movie,” White said. “We can’t say enough about what a great event it was.”
White said she hopes this isn’t the last time Pittsburghers can catch a movie on the rooftop.
“We want to bring a full series for next year, maybe four or five different opportunities to show movies on the rooftops with different themes,” White said, “and hopefully partner with other organizations or events that are occurring Downtown.”
The event starts at 6 p.m. Local band Jimbo and the Soupbones will play at 7 p.m. “The Big Lebowski” is rated R, so anyone under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
