Get Your Autumn Produce, and Some Opera, at the Market Square Farmer's Market

For the next two weeks, amid the autumn offerings of pumpkins and hearty greens, the Market Square Farmer’s Market will feature performances by artists from the Pittsburgh Opera.

Leigh White is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, which hosts the market every Thursday. She said this is the second year they will welcome the Opera to the market.

“To be able to provide something like beautiful opera music in the middle of the day, at lunchtime in Market Square, in a beautiful location, is really an extra bonus to the already exciting farmer’s market,” White said.

White said performances will include selections from classic operas such as Don Giovanni, Carmen, Gianni Schicchi, and La traviata, among others.

“I think the opera really worked to choose really well-known classics that people may hear in different aspects of their life that aren’t necessarily at the theater,” White said.

The market is open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the end of this month.

“It ends on Oct. 30,” White said. “That will be our final farmer’s market of the season and we’re always sad to see it go, but it leaves because we then start to prepare Market Square for the People’s Gas Holiday Market which opens on Light Up Night.”

This year’s Light Up Night is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21.
