Mountainside Baroque 2021-22 Season

Mountainside Baroque 2021-22 Season

Mountainside Baroque is pleased to announce a return to live performance with its 2021-2022 season, “A Joyous Reunion | A Year of Festive Weekends.” In addition to the popular annual “Lessons and Carols” service in December, Mountainside will expand their offerings to include six concerts over three “Festival” weekends in, respectively, October, March and May. Patrons are encouraged to come for the entire weekend, taking in the concerts as well as the many other activities available in the tri-state area. In 2021, the organization rounded off the partially cancelled 2019-2020 season with three streaming videos accessed via their website (www.mountainsidebaroque.org). The videos were viewed a total of over 1,000 times, and two of them, including the hour-long retrospective “Great Music, Again | 10 Years of Mountainside Baroque,” are still available. The weekend of October 9th and 10th features the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble, heard again performing on early brass instruments at the historic Cumberland City Hall on Saturday the 9th at 8pm in “Music for Brass: Seven Giovanni’s.” On Sunday the 10th at 4pm, Mountainside Baroque will present “Venetian Vespers,” featuring music originally written for the famous St. Mark’s Basilica. It will be presented in the Shrine of Ss. Peter and Paul, and include works for voices, strings and early brass by Baroque masters such as Monteverdi and Cavalli. Members of the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble will join the performance. “A Festival of Lessons and Carols,” our traditional community holiday offering of readings, carols, and congregational singing, returns on Sunday, December 19 at 5pm at Emmanuel Episcopal Parish. Patrons can enjoy this popular experience as part of a larger weekend holiday visit to the Cumberland area. On Saturday the 19th at 8pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, “Fond Farewells,” the first of our March weekend events will feature keyboard artist and harpsichordist Marc Bellassai, noted for the unique entertaining talks and tidbits that he brings to his performances of Baroque keyboard music. On the following day, Sunday, March 20th, at 4pm, a concert titled “Night Music of the North” honors the tradition of the Abendmusik (evening music) series at St. Mark’s Church in the Northern German city of Lübeck. Appropriately held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the program of works for voice, strings, and continuo will feature returning celebrity countertenor Nathan Medley and violist da gamba Arnie Tanimoto. The final festive weekend of the 2021-2022 Mountainside Baroque season highlights works originally planned for the 2020 “Music in the Mountains Summer Festival,” cancelled due to the pandemic. On Saturday, May 14, at 8pm, the Fortepiano Trio, composed of Cynthia Roberts, violin, Allen Whear, violoncello, and Yiheng Yang, fortepiano, is sure to deliver a dynamic, virtuosic performance, “Mozart to Beethoven.” It will be presented in the round at the historic Emmanuel Episcopal Parish (built on the site of George Washington’s 18th century fort). The gala finale to the season will be “The Heavens Laugh: Festive Bach,” to take place on Sunday, May 15, at 4pm at the Shrine of Ss. Peter and Paul. Originally planned as the capstone concert of our 2020 Summer Festival, each work in this performance features Baroque trumpets and tympani–J. S. Bach at his most festive! Choral works such as Cantata 31 (Easter) and Cantata 11 (Ascension) are on the docket, along with Suite #3, an instrumental dance suite that includes the familiar Air “on the G String.” As is the Mountainside custom, performances will be preceded by informative talks designed to enhance enjoyment of this timeless music, to begin about one-half hour before the concert. Directed by Ryan Mullaney and Lyle Nordstrom, Mountainside Baroque has brought the engaging music of the Baroque, Renaissance and Classic eras to Cumberland through performances by fine musicians from across the country, who have given concerts that rival those heard at the nation’s major cities. Audiences have consistently grown in number, averaging around 200, a testament to the interest of music lovers in Western Maryland. Tickets, including special FlexSaver booklets, can be purchased in advance at mountainsidebaroque.org, and at the door on the day of the concert. They can also be purchased, with cash or check only, at the Allegany Arts Council, 9 N. Centre Street, Cumberland.
