32-Foot Long Downtown PGH Bridge to Reopen after Reconstruction

PennDOT is to finish work by the end of next week on the Fancourt Bridge that carries ramps from Fort Duquesne Boulevard to I-376 over the 10th Street Bypass in downtown Pittsburgh.

But there will be additional restrictions next week before the span reopens.  The ramp connecting  the 10th Street Bypass to westbound I-376 (outbound Fort Pitt Bridge/Parkway West) will be closed December 10-15 to replace an approach slab on the Fancourt Bridge and reconstruct the bypass roadway along the retaining walls.

The 32-foot long Fancourt Bridge has been closed since September 27  as crews have been removing and replacing the superstructure, bridge deck, beams, bearings and approach slabs.  The 82 year old bridge, which is used by an average of 7,461 vehicles a day, was declared structurally deficient.

The work is part of an $8.7 million project to improve various ramps on the Fort Pitt (I-376) and Fort Duquesne (I-279) bridges and the Parkway East/Central (I-376).  The prime contractor is the Trumbull Corporation of Pittsburgh.

The Fancourt Bridge work necessitated the closure of the ramps from eastbound (inbound) I-376 (Fort Pitt Bridge) and southbound (inbound) I-279 (Fort Duquesne Bridge) to the 10th Street Bypass.

Posted detours:

• Make left onto Stanwix Street
• Turn right onto Liberty Avenue
• Take on-ramp to westbound I-376
• End detour

From westbound Fort Pitt Bridge (I-376)/Portal Bridge to 10th Street Bypass

Meantime, as work nears an end on the Fancourt Bridge, another project is getting underway Monday that will repair joints on the bridge that carries Route 4003 (McKnight Road) over Ingomar Road (Route 4007) in McCandless Township, Allegheny County.

Single lane traffic will occur in both directions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through Dec. 21 between Arcadia and Blazier drives; however one lane will remain open in each direction at all times.

Motorists are advised to use caution, allow extra time when traveling through the area, slow down, and be aware of changing traffic patterns when driving through the area.
