Winter Storm Nemo Wreaks Havoc On Travel Plans

While winter storm Nemo won’t be hitting the Pittsburgh region, its impact will still be felt—especially when it comes to flights from Pittsburgh International.

JoAnn Jenny, spokesperson for the airport, said there wasn’t a final tally by the airport of the amount of cancelled and/or delayed flights, but it wouldn’t be surprising to her if there were going to be “hundreds if not thousands” of flights cancelled because of the storm.

“The airlines attempt to be preemptive and try to cancel flights instead of stranding people,” Jenny said. “With the level of snow that’s expected in the northeast, there are some projections of airports closing, and so there are some airlines that are also considering repositioning aircraft here in Pittsburgh to keep them out of harm’s way.”

Winter storm conditions are forecast for the northeastern United States for Friday night going into early Saturday. For areas in the coastal northeast such as Newark, Boston and New York City, there are blizzard warnings as well. Total snowfall accumulation in the blizzard areas could be 1-2 feet.
