In all, 46 state-owned bridges in PennDOT District 11 (Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence Counties) will be posted with new or lowered weight restricted in the coming weeks. The move is meant to slow deterioration on the bridges as funding for major repairs remains uncertain. About 1,000 bridges statewide are considered structurally deficient, according to PennDOT.
The following is a list of state-owned bridges in Allegheny County that will be posted in coming weeks, along with the new weight restrictions. The list includes combination loads, primarily tractor trailers, which have higher weight limits because of the difference in how their weight is distributed:
- Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) over the south fork of Montour Run in North Fayette Township, 29 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 48 (Boston Hollow Road) over a branch of Wylie Run in Lincoln Borough, 32 tons;
- Route 51 (Elizabeth Bridge) over Route 837 and the Monongahela River in Elizabeth Township, 32 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) over Spruce Run and Spruce Street in Ben Avon Borough, 32 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 1006 (Saxonburg Boulevard) over a branch of Little Pine Creek in Indiana Township, 38 tons;
- Route 1012 (Church Lane) over Shafers Run in Indiana Township, 28 tons;
- Route 1013 (Saxonburg Boulevard) over Little Pine Creek in Shaler Township, 31 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 1020 (Campbell Road) over Cunningham Run in West Deer Township, 17 tons except combinations 28 tons;
- Route 1027 (Pleasantville Road) over Little Bull Creek in Harrison Township, 28 tons except combinations 34 tons;
- Route 1028 (Bakerstown Road) over Lardintown Run in Fawn Township, 34 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 1031 (Lardintown Road) over Bull Creek in Fawn Township, 36 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 2010 (Lovedale Road) over Wylie Run in Lincoln Borough, 28 tons;
- Route 2031 (Lincoln Way) over Long Run in White Oak Borough, 33 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 2046 (Streets Run Road) over Streets Run in Baldwin Borough, 32 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 2065 (Thompson Run Road) over Thompson Run in Wilkins Township, 13 tons;
- Route 2075 (Logans Ferry Road) over Poketa Creek in Plum Borough, 29 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 2086 (Leechburg Road) over Plum Creek in Plum Borough, 33 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 2118 (Center Street) over Long Run in White Oak Borough, 25 tons except combinations 31 tons;
- Route 3021 (Walton Road) over Lobbs Run in Jefferson Hills Borough, 32 tons;
- Route 3069 (Liberty Bridge) over the Monongahela River, Route 837, I-376 and Second Avenue in the City of Pittsburgh, 30 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 3070 (Santiago Road) over Montour Run in North Fayette Township, 35 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 3111 (Sugar Grove Road) over Shouse Run in Crescent Township, 32 tons;
- Route 4017 (Pine Creek Road) over Little Pine Creek in Shaler Township, 33 tons except combinations 40 tons;
- Route 4036 (Big Sewickley Creek Road) over Big Sewickley Creek in Bell Acres Borough, 34 tons except combinations 40 tons;
PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch authorized the new or added weight restrictions on August 22.
In a statement, PennDOT said it is taking this step because legislative inaction on transportation funding left uncertain the department’s ability to repair or replace these bridges. The lower weight limits are intended to help extend the service life of these deteriorating bridges.
