Doing What You Love as a Career is Not as Easy as it Sounds

People are often told to do what they love and the money will follow. But that’s easier said than done and doesn’t always work out the way people hope. Independent career consultant Sasha King said that this commonly given advice has a few flaws.

“Many times people follow their bliss because they get a lot of enjoyment out of their work, but when they don’t get those warm, fuzzy feelings, they have a tendency to lose discipline. Another issue is too much competition. There are plenty of things that people would like to do, but whether it’s realistic or not to pursue that path economically, that’s another story,” said King.

For those who really want to do what they love as a career, she said, “Accept the fact that even if you love what you’re doing, part of it is going to be a grind.”
