East Suburban YMCA Breaks Ground on Massive $11M Expansion

The YMCA in Plum broke ground today for an $11 million dollar expansion that when complete will create the new 52,000 square-foot Sampson Family Y. The new facility at the East Suburban YMCA will include a warm water therapy pool and indoor lap pool.

“Right now we teach 400 kids a year to swim with our outdoor complex, now we’ll be able to teach 2,000 kids a year to be able to be safe by water, to be able to teach families with the teaching kitchen how to prepare meals for their families on a tight schedule,” said Larry Stormer East Suburban YMCA executive director.

Stormer said the expansion will allow the Y to reach out to more of the communities it serves, which are Plum, Monroeville, and Murrysville.

“What I’m especially pleased about is, in another community we’re going to be able to reach out and touch the lives of so many people, and you know our Y impacts and changes lives, and to be about to say that we’re going to be able to do that with double the people we have now, it’s very meaningful,” said Rig Riggins, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh.

The new facility will also include youth and adult sports leagues, cardiovascular and strength training, teen mentoring and leadership, more family programs, and job and volunteer opportunities. $5 million has been raised so far, and a public capital campaign will kick off in the coming weeks.
