In a pilot program launching next spring, Uber is offering 100 Pittsburgh-area drivers a $500 incentive to go toward classes, fees and textbooks for the Community College of Allegheny County.

The initiative will take place in next year's spring and summer semesters.

In a press release, CCAC said the greatest barrier for many potential students is the price of textbooks and required fees, and the new program would address those needs.

According to the data from the U.S. Department of Education, a full-time student from Allegheny County would pay $5,500 for tuition, books and fees per year at CCAC.

As CCAC spring semester enrollment begins, Uber will contact eligible Pittsburgh-area drivers with information on how to apply for the program. The drivers will then be selected at random.

According to an Uber survey, more than 10 percent of drivers identified as students.

Updated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5 to reflect the way drivers will be selected to enter the program.
