The Pittsburgh Opera is continuing its production of “La cenerentola,” or “Cinderella,” this weekend. With music by Gioachino Rossini, this opera tells the classic fairy tale story in which Cinderella must overcome an abusive step-family with the help of a fairy godmother to fall in love with a handsome prince. However, this production of Cinderella has a special ending that celebrates the power of true goodness. Tonight’s performance begins at 8:00 at the Benedum Center in downtown Pittsburgh. Also, look out for tickets for additional shows on Tuesday night and next weekend.
South Hills residents will be convening in the community of Mount Lebanon to celebrate Earth Day today. From 11:00 this morning until 3:00 this afternoon, the event at Mount Lebanon Park will feature food vendors and several booths on environmental sustainability. Visitors can use bicycles to generate power for some of the music equipment, and several companies will be on hand to show off their green products and how they work. In addition, there will be a climbing wall, tye-dyeing, and a collection for hard-to-recycle electronics. The Earth Day celebration runs from 11:00-3:00 today at Mount Lebanon Park on Cedar Boulevard.
To mark its tenth anniversary, the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival presents “The Dubbyk: Between Two Worlds” this weekend. Jewish singers will perform a multimedia chamber opera at the New Hazlett Theater in this work composed by Ofer Ben-Amots and inspired by the classic Yiddish play of the same name. The haunting opera follows a young woman who must choose either a life with a man she does not know or to join her dead lover in the grave. Sung in Hebrew with English supertitles, “The Dubbyk” begins tomorrow night at 7:30 at the New Hazlett Theater in Pittsburgh’s North Side.
The Carnegie Museum of Art celebrates the Month of the Young Child today with “Play Day!” The museum in Oakland will open up its “Lozziwurm” sculpture for kids to play in and on. The Imagination Playground, a set of blue blocks of various shapes and sizes, also opens up for today only. Kids under twelve years old get in to the Carnegie Museum of Art for free today as well. The Carnegie Museum’s “Play Day!” begins at 10:00 this morning and continues through 3:00 this afternoon.
