Toys for Troops Helps Service Members and Vets Make Ends Meet

A toy giveaway focused on veterans, active duty personnel and members of the National Guard makes its debut in Pennsylvania Tuesday.

The Toys for Troops event will pass out two gifts per child for every military family in the Pittsburgh area. Operation Once in a Lifetime runs the event, and East Coast Regional Operations manager Marc Morris said these kind of initiatives are important because often times vets won't speak up when they need something.

"That's why we just say 'Hey, show up and we've got the toys,' because some people, whether it be vets or not, are just too proud to take the handout," MOrris said. "And we want them to know this isn't a handout. This is just soldiers helping soldiers."

Gift recipients will remain anonymous, and will be given age appropriate toys at the VA's north hills campus. The donation is made possible by a grant from the Construction Association of Western Pennsylvania and the American Legion.

The giveaway take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, Adult Day Care Center, Building 71, H.J. Heinz Campus in O'Hara Township.
