Update: the Borough of Charleroi Water Authority lifted the boil water advisory on 2/16/19.
The Borough of Charleroi Water Authority is warning residents of parts of Charleroi, Monessen and Speers to boil their water before drinking.
This is due to a transmission line leak discovered on Tuesday, which caused a loss of positive pressure. Officials say there is an increased chance that the water system is contaminated with bacteria that can cause disease.
The following areas are affected:
According to the Borough of Charleroi Water Authority, water buffalos are available for use at the Speer Borough Building and three fire departments: Charleroi, North Charleroi and Monessen #1 Downtown.
Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection recommends that residents boil water for one minute and let it cool before using. Boiled water or bottled water should be used for drinking, washing dishes, brushing teeth and food preparation.
If bacteria is present in the water, bringing water to a boil will kill it. The Authority will lift the advisory when laboratory samples of the affected water come back negative for disease causing organisms.
