Chelsea Clinton campaigned for her mother, Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, in downtown Pittsburgh this morning. Clinton highlighted her mother’s devotion to women’s rights and family issues, saying she was someone who had been working for women and minorities for her entire career.

“Paid family and medical leave is one of the reasons she’s running for president,” Clinton said. “It matters to me that she knows that becoming a mom isn’t the only medical event or family prerogative that we often face in our lives, which is what Donald Trump seems to think is true.”

Clinton, 36, referred to her two children throughout the 30-minute speech and question-and-answer session.  She said being a mother has made her think a lot about her children’s future.

“Ultimately it does come down to our values,” Clinton said. “We have to stand against the temptation of normalization of hate speech.”

She spoke to a crowd of about 100 at the Rivers Club. The event was sponsored by Pennsylvania Women for Hillary. She was introduced by Erin McClelland, who is running for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District. McClelland promoted Hillary Clinton’s campaign, saying it was an important time to support women in government this election, especially in the commonwealth.

“I get to go into that booth and vote for not one, not two, but three women on the federal ticket,” McClelland said.

She’s referring to herself in District 12, as well as Democratic Senate nominee Katie McGinty and Hillary Clinton. No woman has ever represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate.

Citing statistics from a recent Oxford Economic study, Chelsea Clinton said her mother’s platform would bring in significantly more jobs to the Pennsylvania region and that Trump’s plan would actually eliminate jobs.

Chelsea Clinton also spoke this afternoon at the University of Pittsburgh to a crowd at the O’Hara Student Center.
