The deadline for Pennsylvania seniors to apply for rent and property tax rebates is just days away and lawmakers are reminding eligible citizens to take action.
The deadline comes at the end of business December 31st. The rebate program, is open to Pennsylvania homeowners and renters who are 65 and older; widows and widowers 50 and older; and people with disabilities 18 and older with incomes of $35,000 a year or less for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters.
Only half of a resident’s social security income counts toward the total household income.
The program is funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for qualifying homeowners can boost rebates to $975.
Property Tax and Rent Rebate claim forms and information can be found online at www.revenue.state.pa.us, by calling 1-888-222-9190, or at hundreds of locations across the state including legislative offices, local area agencies on aging, senior centers, and Department of Revenue district offices.
According to State Senator John Yudichak (D- Luzerne) said last year, more than 604,000 senior citizens received a total of $284 million in rebates. So far this year, more than 595,000 households have applied for rebates.
Yudichak is encouraging seniors to apply for the rebate even if they may not have qualified for it previously. He said minor change in household income could make them eligible for a rebate.
