It’s not too early and not too cold to start thinking about the high school prom and the Allegheny County Department of Human Services is hoping you will do just that.  The department has kicked off its tenth annual Project Prom, which offers free formal attire and accessories to local students who might otherwise find it difficult to afford the requisite finery.

Donations of used formalwear can be dropped off through March 8th downtown at One Smithfield Street in the Human Services Building or at South Hills Interfaith Ministries 5302 Park Avenue in Bethel Park through March 4th.  The Prom Project Shop at Century III Mall will also accept donations while it’s open for shopping from March 5 through March 8.

Brendan Hanschen, Event and Donations Coordinator, says gift certificates are welcome, in addition to clothing.  "We are looking for clothing that the young women and men that we serve would be proud to wear to their proms and that they could enjoy wearing--items that are clean, that are currently styled and fabulous-looking gowns and tuxedos...".

In order to shop, young men and women must live in Allegheny County and have a valid student ID.  Women are eligible if they receive services or have a family member receiving services through DHS, or qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch, or have a caretaker receiving unemployment benefits.  Men must receive services or have a family member receiving services through DHS, and are required to pre-register by contacting their caseworker.
