State, City Elected Officials Voice Support for Peduto

With less than a month before the primary election, Bill Peduto shored up support Thursday for his bid to become Pittsburgh’s next mayor.

Peduto was joined by representatives from 22 unions and organizations, as well as 15 elected officials on the steps of the Pittsburgh City-County Building.

“The number one thing is we really need a mayor who can work with everybody, and Bill Peduto has shown he can do that,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said. “He’s done that as a member of city council over the last 12 years and will continue to do that in the mayor’s office.”

State Rep. Ed Gainey (D-Allegheny) said Pittsburgh not only needs a mayor with a vision, but also a mayor who knows how to grow the community and move the city forward.

"We have to build new alliances and new coalitions, whether it’s from the north, the south, the east or the west," he said. "From clergy to labor, to elected officials, we need someone that can build relationships, and we need someone with a proven track record that has done it in the past. Ladies and gentleman, that man is Bill Peduto.”

Among the elected leaders on hand to support Peduto were state Senators Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) and Wayne Fontana (D-Allegheny) and city council members Natalia Rudiak and Patrick Dowd.

Three other candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination for mayor: former state Auditor General Jack Wagner, state Rep. Jake Wheatley and community activist A.J. Richardson.
