Voters Favor Keeping 4 PA Appellate Judges In

Pennsylvania voters have approved additional 10-year terms for four state appellate judges.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald Castille and Justice Max Baer and Superior Court judges Susan Gantman and Jack Panella faced up-or-down "retention" votes to decide if they should stay on the bench.

Judges are unopposed in retention elections.

Castille, a former Philadelphia district attorney, has served on the state's highest court for two decades and as chief justice since 2008. If retained, he would be forced to retire at the end of 2014, when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70.

Baer, a former Allegheny County judge, Panella, a former Northampton County judge, and Gantman, a former Montgomery County lawyer, were elected to their first terms in 2003.
