Bipartisan Pair of PA Lawmakers Push for Homelessness Study

Some state lawmakers are pushing for a study of homelessness in the commonwealth in order to get a better understanding of what advocates say is a growing problem.

The effort would look at the occurrence of homelessness, and its effects and trends in Pennsylvania.

Dale Lanigan, who helps coordinate volunteers at an emergency overnight men’s shelter in Harrisburg, says it would answer important questions.

"Every year there’s a point-in-time study that is done about about how many homeless there are in Harrisburg. From our experience, I don’t know that I can say. I’d be reluctant to say that the numbers have increased but the studies that are done each year shows that they have."

Two House members, a Democrat and a Republican, have proposed the study.

Their legislative memo suggests its findings would help find potential remedies.

The resolution awaits a House committee vote.
