Vice President Joe Biden stumped for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Katie McGinty at Chatham University on Tuesday.
Despite a bitter and divisive presidential election season, Biden said he is more optimistic about America’s prospects today than he has ever been before in his life.
“We are better positioned than any nation in the world to own the 21st Century,” Biden told the crowd of about 250 people assembled in Chatham’s gymnasium.

But, he said, “we need to get out of our own way,” and that begins with electing a Democratic senate so that Clinton can pursue her platform.
Among the policy proposals Biden highlighted on Tuesday was Clinton’s promise to provide affordable childcare, 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents and free community college for young people. He pointed to $1.3 trillion in tax loopholes, some of which could be closed in order to pay for such initiatives.
Biden said he knows of many Republicans in the senate who “know better” than to knee-jerk obstruct a Democratic president.
“When we take back the Senate, it will free up about 30 Republican senators to begin to function again, because the pressure will be off them to have to be so recalcitrant on everything and (abuse) the power of the senate,” he said.
