Authorities say an off-duty police officer was critically wounded in a shooting in Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh public safety officials say officers responded to a report of gunfire in the neighborhood of Homewood at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and found 36-year-old Officer Calvin Hall with multiple gunshot wounds. Hall was taken to an unnamed hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition.
“At some point, there was an argument or disagreement in the street,” said an emailed statement from the Department of Public Safety. “Officer Hall was in Homewood visiting friends when the shooting occurred.”
Police said several people attending a party near the crime scene were questioned and a SWAT team was called to search a house. It's unclear whether the victim had been at the party.
The statement said that Hall is a two-year veteran of the Bureau, assigned to the Northview Heights Public Safety Center. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and previously worked for Braddock Police.
“He is always positive, always upbeat," said Sgt. Joseph Lewis, who heads the Northview Heights Public Safety Center. "I approached him and said, ‘I want you up here because of your personality and the way you interact with the community.’ He’s always smiling, always positive.”
Hall’s family is asking the media and public for privacy. The department urges anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the police.
