The Mattress Factory presents "Art Lab: Sculpting with Light." Stop by for a hands-on show dedicated to showing how artist James Turrell “sculpts with light.” Participants will create their own slides to project and explore the process of making art with a fabulously elusive material. The Art Lab runs this Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Mattress Factory lobby on Pittsburgh’s North Side.
The collaborative efforts of the Carnegie Science Center and Phipps Conservatory have produced an educational, all-ages Butterfly Weekend. This Saturday the Science Center will provide butterfly-themed hands-on activities and science demos. On Sunday, Phipps will continue the celebration with several butterfly tours and discovery stations. Bring the whole family for the two-day event, starting this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carnegie Science Center on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, and continuing on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Phipps Conservatory in Schenley Park in Oakland.
The Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre launches the Pittsburgh premiere of "The Kreutzer Sonata" this weekend. Based upon a novella by Leo Tolstoy and inspired by Beethoven’s powerful sonata for piano and violin, the story weaves a tale of love, loss, and betrayal. Directed by Alan Stanford and adapted by Irish playwright Nancy Harris, the performance begins Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Henry Heymann Theatre in Oakland. Look for a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, and for additional performances continuing throughout the month of June.
The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is hosting the special event "MAKESHOP City" this Saturday and Sunday. Visitors and staff members cooperate to design and build a miniature city from the ground up, using recycled materials, cardboard, and other found objects to construct a house, building, or structure. Eventually, each individual effort will come together to form a mini-community. Come to the Children’s Museum on the North Side this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
