Exhibition Of Pittsburgh Artists Opens In London This Weekend

Alisha Wormsley's "There Are Black People In The Future" will be on display on the banks for the River Thames, alongside 11 other artworks.

A dozen Pittsburgh artists will have their work exhibited in London beginning this weekend. The exhibition, titled Pittsburgh Art on the Bank, includes works from photographer Teenie Harris, sculptor Thad Mosley, interdisciplinary artist Alisha Wormsley, cartoonist Ed Piskar and others. It’s meant to publicize British Airways’ new nonstop flights from Pittsburgh to London Heathrow, which launched in April, and promote the Steel City as a vacation destination.

“It’s a way to educate [Londoners] that Pittsburgh has been a transformed city,” said Tom Loftus with VisitPittsburgh. “We’re now known for our food, our arts and cultural, and so many other things … this [is] a vivid reminder that Pittsburgh has something special to offer.”

The exhibition is situated in London’s South Bank neighborhood, a hub for art and culture along the River Thames.

“South Bank in London is a popular spot for not only visitors but also residents to walk through,” Loftus said. “It’s an arts community, which is important, because we definitely wanted to tie into the type of people that would come by and would appreciate the art.”

Visitors will be able to take free lessons in Andy Warhol’s signature technique of silk-screening and enter to win a free trip for two to Pittsburgh.

The weeklong pop-up exhibition runs June 2-9.
