A Message From Terry O'Reilly

On Friday, March 17, 2017 the White House released details of a proposed Federal Budget for 2018 that would, among other things, eliminate all federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. I'm writing to share with you what we know, and what it potentially means for WESA and WYEP.

Federal funding is critical to the mission and success of public broadcasting. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting distributes federal dollars to local public radio and television stations across the country. For WESA and WYEP, those federal funds make up roughly $300,000 of our annual operating revenue.

The federal government is not our largest source of funding, but it is an essential part of the diverse revenue base that makes our work possible. Our largest source of funding is, and has always been, direct support from individual listeners like you. For that reason, your continued support of WESA and WYEP is the best way to secure the future of public radio in Pittsburgh and throughout the region.

Our mission to inform and inspire the public has never been more critical. And federal funding is essential to ensure that this fundamental tool of democracy remains available to all Americans, and thrives well into the future.

If you are already a contributor to WESA or WYEP, I would ask you to increase your support, to become a sustaining member (if you are not already), and to encourage a friend to give. If you are a listener to our stations, but not yet a member, please consider joining us today.

I would also encourage you to visit the Protect My Public Media website to get more information, and to declare your support for federal funding for public broadcasting.

We in public media are in the unique position of addressing our audiences as citizens rather than consumers. And our essential work is made possible only through the support of good people like you.

Thank you for your support and thank you for listening.

Sincerely,

Terry O'Reilly
President & CEO, Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting
