New City Theatre Production Puts Spotlight On School-To-Prison Pipeline

The school-to-prison pipeline is the inspiration for a new show at Pittsburgh's City Theatre. Obie award-winning playwright Dominque Morisseau wrote PIPELINE to explore the disproportionate disciplining of minority students, which can put them on the pathway to eventual incarceration.

City Theatre director and artistic producer Reginald L. Douglas talks about the real-life local issues that informed the play. He’s joined by Angel Gober, the lead education justice organizer for OnePA and the Education Rights Network.

Elsewhere in the program, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has gone to recess until election season is over. 90.5 WESA’s Katie Meyer breaks down what was left on the table, including a bill that would open up a two-year window for victims of child sexual abuse lawsuits and a move to decrease the number of seats in the state House.

The battle for Pennsylvania’s 14th U.S. Congressional District is being fought between Pennsylvania Senator Guy Reschenthaler and businesswoman Bibiana Boerio. The district includes counties like Washington, Fayette, Greene and much of Westmoreland. It’s favored towards the Republican Reschenthaler, and was won by President Trump in 2016.

Hear from Terri Minor Spencer, the founder of West End P.O.W.E.R. (Providing Opportunities with Effective Resources). Spencer is working to revitalize Pittsburgh’s West End, including an adult GED program and a partnership with the local Salvation Army.
